Parabolic Forms

12/03/2014/Architecture

I was originally looking at crystals and their growth at the initial stages of my final design project. This was in collaboration with my caramel modelling and started to analyse the formation of these caramel forms under the microscope. The formation of these organic forms are made up of rigid forms. These cube like forms are hidden to the naked eye and what we see are these soft curves and flowing forms.

This concept led me to look at the forms of parabolic curves, how a straight, ridged line can be arranged with other straight lines to form an inward curve.

I started to look into this formation and question if it could become the underlying structure for my proposed building, creating a lattice of straight beams. This formation has the desirable structural strength over curved surfaces and structures like beams.
